I don’t even know how many essential oil based businesses like Doterra but I still can’t get what all the fuss is about.
Then we have those that have oils and other products like Melaleuca.
So what makes this one any different?
Is this really “the one” or are you just considering this because of the hype that was presented to you by someone who rarely talks to you?
Whatever the case may be, I’m sure this review will help you gain a better understanding of what you are getting involved with.
And ultimately if this is one that you should invest your hard earned money and most especially your valuable time in.
Although I think affiliate marketing will always beat MLM, I always try to see the best in any company and that’s what I will be trying to uncover within this post.
So before you commit to anything, allow me to give you the ins and outs of yet another multilevel marketing/essential oil based company.

So What is Young Living?
Young Living is a U.S based multi level marketing company (MLM) that is in the business of selling essential oils.
The market for these products is pretty big right now which makes this a really good opportunity for a sales minded person to make a good living.
Well at least that’s what everyone’s plan is upon joining an MLM and that’s not usually the outcome.
That said, MLMs generally don’t provide the guarantee of financial stability.
How much you make is predicated largely on your skills as a salesperson.
So if you are thinking about joining the thousands of people that have taken advantage of Young Living’s business, you are going to want all the information you can get.
Especially since this company was founded in 1992.
That is exactly why today we will be taking an in-depth look at Young Living to determine whether or not it is a business opportunity that you would like to pursue or not.
The Products
So, what exactly are we selling here?
Young Living is mostly in the market of New Age, or, all natural products.
You know about essential oils by now, right?
They have been big for a long time now, but they seem to be enjoying a period of particular popularity and you can see it through social media.
These oils can be rubbed on your skin or evaporated in the air to create a pleasant smell, a relaxing effect, and if some are to be believed, healing properties.
For the sake of a full disclosure, however, it is only fair to mention that they probably do not actually have much in way of healing properties.
Why do I mention this?
It’s not to be petty.
It is because Young Living has actually gotten in a little bit of trouble for overstating the potential of their oils, kind of like how Kyani did with their products.
A Little History
As recently as 2014 the Food and Drug Administration had to reprimand them for suggesting that their oils could cure things like heart disease, some cancers, and Ebola.
It’s a little shady, but on the other hand it also somewhat reflects the beliefs of people that partake of essential oils.
No, they probably do not think that it will cure cancer, but they do often believe they have healing properties, especially when there is money to be made.
In other words, many people that enjoy these oils probably won’t be offended by the idea that the company believes them to have significant healing potential.
Even if some of the claims do sound clearly overstated.
It’s really important to think hard about the product or service that is offered by an MLM before you commit to selling it.
I think that in the case of these oils in particular you should commit to some soul searching before you to decide whether or not you would like to sell them.
Why?
While there is a big market for essential oils, it is also a pretty specific market.
You are going to need to know a lot about these oils in order to sell them to people that use them on a regular basis.
If this isn’t already an interest of yours than you will probably be better served looking at a different financial opportunity with something more like affiliate marketing.
On the other hand, if you are already interested and knowledgeable in essential oils, you could certainly make a good income selling them through Young Living with the right training and mindset.
The Compensation Plan
While the compensation plan on MLMs usually varies depending on how many sales you have made and your level of seniority on the sales staff the general entry level commission is 25% for most companies, and that is true of Young Living as well.
25% definitely isn’t a shabby compensation plan, though at that rate you are going to need to sell a lot of oil in order to make a good living.
After all, these products aren’t extremely pricy, which means it will take a lot of customers to make a good living.
Of course, the question that you are probably asking yourself is, just how much are people making off of that 25% commission?
Well, not very much.
In fact last year 96% of the sales staff only made a dollar working with young living for the entire year.
It sounds really bad, I know, but this is actually a fairly standard number in the world of MLM.
A lot of people that sign up for these services don’t commit to pursing them with the effort that is required to find success.
The good news is that if you can commit to the proper amount of effort, there really is no limit to the amount of money that you can make by selling this product.
No, you shouldn’t count on six figures, but for the talented salesperson, it is not out of the realm of possibilities to supplement your income by a few thousand dollars a year through Young Living.
The Price
To get started you are first going to need to invest in a starter kit and they range from $45 to $260.
They include training materials as well as your first batch of product.
The more expensive the kit the more that you get in the department of materials and product.
You don’t get a lot with the $45 membership, but it does buy you the right to purchase product at wholesale and get started with your new business.
Given the fact that most representatives are only brining in a dollar a year is pretty crazy.
I would personally recommend that you start with one of the lower tier product packages and seeing how you do with that first.
Pros & Cons of Young Living
Pros:
- Can make you money
- Decent products
- Affordable
- Essential oils are popular
Cons:
- Very low success rate (comes with any MLM)
- Recruiting is necessary
- Is ran off of a pyramid style business model
- Is definitely not for everyone
Conclusion
Young Living is just like any other multilevel marketing company you have seen and the products are decent but not going to be your ticket to financial freedom.
Is Young Living right for you?
Well, that is hard to say, especially in light of the recent, though ultimately pretty mild controversy surrounding their products.
It is also natural to be a little taken aback by the amount of people that are making a dollar a year or less working for this company.
The truth of the matter is that with MLMs, there is usually a little bit of controversy.
There are certainly plenty of people that aren’t making much money, which is typical with EVERY other MLM.
Why?
It’s sales and sales is not for everyone.
But if you know a lot about essential oils, and you have a way with people, I still think that Young Living represents a great opportunity to supplement your income!
In the end and at the very least, this company is legit and not a scam.
It might not be my #1 recommended work from home opportunity but it is definitely there for anyone who likes essential oils.
What I Really Think
I am currently still ordering from a company called Melaleuca and only because I think the products are fair.
I do zero recruiting as I am not into network marketing but it is probably one that I would recommend to anyone who is looking for a solid MLM company.
Now if you are simply looking to make some real money online, you definitely want to try a program called the Wealthy Affiliate.
No recruiting and you do not need to own any type of products.
By far the best work from home business model and is definitely worth it, especially with their free trial.
