I have been blogging for almost 5 years now and although it is one heck of an accomplishment there have been many obstacles along the way that I did notice but never put much thought into it.
My business got into a little scuffle with my craziness and thanks to a good buddy of mine (Kyle from WA) who did a little webinar on “The 7 Factor Secret Sauce” I was able to understand some of the issues that needed attention.
You can always check that out if you are a member of Wealthy Affiliate but I will be covering just one of the topics he covered in that live event as it is over an hour long.
I will definitely be covering other “secrets” in that webinar here on my blog for those of you loyal followers of mine but for today, I would like to cover the very common and very important question that most bloggers will never really understand.
“Should I do more than one niche website?”
As a newb to the world of affiliate marketing, blogging, and online marketing as a whole, I clearly understood what the answer was and I followed exactly that.
Fast forward to year number 3 of the success I was having online and a lot of the stuff I already knew in the first place actually went out the door.
Being that I did get back to my senses, I decided to evaluate my situation and give some sound advice in the process.
So for those of you who are working on more than one site at the moment or those of you who are thinking about doing more than one, this is most especially for you.
Should You Do More Than One Niche Website?
This can be a very confusing question that needs the right advice so try to follow along as I dissect a very loaded question.
I also did a post on why you need more than one niche website so it might sound confusing but let me do my best to explain such a complicated topic.
If you are completely new to blogging, affiliate marketing, and making money online, you flat out only need one website.
Do keep in mind that your first niche might not be your last and you might end up changing it somewhere down the road.
I would pick 5 niches, get a domain for each one, and start working on the one you feel most passionate about.
Once you have that in order, start building out that ONE site and do not stop until you start making money.
And if you feel that you are ready to start outsourcing your content, then maybe (just maybe) you can think about starting on another project.
But even at that, unless you are doing a micro niche site, all you really need is one authority site as that will last you for as long as it really needs to.
Besides that, here are more reasons as to why you only need to start with one niche site.
You Are Only One Person
Working on a single website is going to take a lot of your time. A single website comes with many tasks that require more time than anything else.
First comes the initial blogging that takes about 2 hours average, thanks to the need for images and proper placement of internal and affiliate links. Then comes the sharing and promotion, which will take another hour or so. And depending on your niche, comments and all that good stuff will require more time.
Take all your energy and put it into everything mentioned above or you will pay for it in a way that you will most likely never notice.
Your Half Effort Will Reflect
Trying to work on even just two sites was a task and a half.
Hired a couple of writers and figured that I was actually more productive than usual. That’s how it was until I started monitoring the time it took me to fix these posts and add images.
From what seemed to be productive was actually not the case. I was putting in the same amount of time and effort with the only difference being that I was forking out hundreds of dollars. I was paying someone so that I can work harder is what was happening.
On top of all this, my work was starting to lose quality, conversions were at an all-time low, and there was just no productive structure in place.
This was just not the time to diversify and it was not the time for even another niche site.
Every Niche Has Room For Expanding
Regardless of what niche you get into, there will always be room for dipping into other aspects of a very targeted topic.
Sure you want to start with a very targeted niche but that does not mean you need to stay on that same subject.
Unless you are in a micro-niche, you can do so much with your current site.
I started a niche on men’s bags and eventually started doing posts on men’s hygiene.
Footlocker is supposed to be a shoe store but they sell socks, hats, and a bunch of other gear that are far off from shoes.
This site started as a place for work at home jobs and I have now gone into specific aspects of affiliate marketing and blogging.
The point is that you can and should venture off into other things, especially when you feel that you have exhausted all options for your actual niche.
Conclusion – Put All Your Effort in ONE Site
Start with just one site.
Get really good at one thing and focus on building that one site until you are making a nice income.
If you know what it takes to be successful with affiliate marketing or any kind of online marketing, you will know that one website is all you really need.
There comes a point where you will feel a bit stagnant and in need of some kind of change but that is completely normal.
Take some time off your site, do some reading and studying of other ways you can build on your current site, and find that same passion you had when you first started.
If you are lacking that motivation and fire that you once had, just remember that you are not alone.
Get it together, understand what just happened, and blog on.
You have the foundation for something great now get your site to a level that only some online marketers can only imagine.
