Finding work after retirement or even when you are over the 50 year mark can be quite the task and that is why most are turning to the internet to find their next employer.
I am not 50 and I am not retired but I do know the best places to make money online and that is what I want to share with you today.
So if you’re in need of some extra money and you are having a hard time finding some kind of employment, you will find at least one type of job that you might be interested in on this list.
The word “blog” doesn’t always resonate so well with the post fifty crowd, but if you are considering a career change, you really may want tot think about giving this opportunity a chance.
While the notion of a blog may seem intimidating, or foreign, the reality of this medium is that it can be anything that you want it to be.
The blog is a personal, direct to audience way to communicate ideas and experiences. It is story telling, really, and when done the right way, it can be lucrative.
Do you love to travel? That can be a blog.
Do you love sports? That can also be a blog.
Maybe you love to cook. Or garden. Or golf. Or play tennis.
You name a hobby, and there is a blogging opportunity out there that will make an appropriate fit for it.
Bloggers usually make money two ways: one, by web traffic related advertisement revenue, and two, by making commissions through affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing gives bloggers the opportunity to recommend products that they like, and then make a little bit of money if their audience decides to purchase said product.
If you are thinking about going the route of the blogger, just keep in mind that success usually is not instantaneous.
Most bloggers can go up to a year without seeing any profit. Still, if the lifestyle of the blogger sounds right for you, and you have the savings required to pause your income, this can serve as an exciting opportunity.’
With sites like the Wealthy Affiliate, blogging for money has never been easier.
Or, Write For Someone Else’s Blog:
Becoming a freelancer blogger/writer also gives you the pleasure of writing about unique topics for a living, but it has the added bonus of producing a reliable salary.
When you write for other people, you don’t have to worry about the year or so learning curve that comes with trying to make money from your own website.
There are plenty of websites out there that connect freelance writers with the publications that might be interested in hiring them.
PeoplePerHour, Fiverr, Freelancer, and UpWork, are several examples of sites that can make it easy for you to find freelance writing work, and start making money immediately.
Now that you have accumulated some knowledge and some life experience, it is time to translate that wisdom into some cash!
If you have developed an expertise at something (math, science, history, literature, etc) and you think that you would be cable of doing a good job explaining it to someone that is struggling to learn it, then online tutoring might be for you.
The way that work from home, online tutoring works is simple: you sign up with a site that connects students with tutors, you take on the jobs that you are interested in, and then you improve their education through your knowledge!
Degrees in the discipline that you intend to teach are helpful but not necessary in getting work. Tutoring sessions generally take place over some form of video chat.
The world of MLM (multi level marketing) is often under scrutiny, for the fact that it has been host to some shady players over the years.
Still, there is a reason that this industry is so popular: some people really are making a lot of money working as direct sellers, and they are doing so while enjoying a flexible schedule that they make for themselves.
If you don’t know what terms like “direct seller,” or “MLM” mean, chances are you are still familiar with some of the companies that fit into their category.
Think Tupperware, Avon, and so many others. If you have ever been to a Tupperware party, then you have interacted directly with a MLM sales person.
While this can be, for many people, a challenging way to make a living, people over fifty do seem to have an advantage in this market.
Why? Potential customers often view them as more trustworthy advocates of the products that they are promoting.
And the good news is that you wouldn’t even have to stretch the truth and endorse a product that you aren’t interested in. There are so many MLMs out there now, that chances are you can find one that is producing merchandise that you really love.
If you do decide to go this route, just be sure to do some research before you sign on with anyone. Seeing what other people have to say about an MLM before you join up is a great way to avoid dealing with shady businesses.
Do you love to read? More importantly, do you love to proofread? If you have an eye for grammar, you can make good, easy money, proofreading copy for other people and tweaking it to deliver a nice final polish.
How much money that you can make as a freelance, work from home proofreader is limited only by the fees that you are able to negotiate with your clients.
Like many of the other opportunities on our list today, there are websites where you can go to find clients as a proofreader.
We will just put it on front street that working as a transcriber is not seen as particularly exciting by most people. However, when done from home, the work can be very comfortable, and of course, lucrative.
The job of the transcriber is exactly what one would assume: you listen to various sources of audio media, and transcribe it in an easy to read and accurate format that is pleasing to the client.
Some people actually do get a kick out of the work, and enjoy listening to the various forms of media that come with the job.
There is a big market for medical record transcribers, but this is also more challenging work (as many of the terms used are so foreign to the average person that they are difficult to quickly transcribe).
However, if you are not comfortable going this route, you certainly don’t have to.
The ideal transcriber is going to be very quick on the keyboard, and of course, very accurate.
Data Entry is a little bit like the work of a transcriber, but there is slightly less of a premium put on speed. The job of the work from home data entryiest is to take data from a variety of documents, including memos, emails, and more, and assemble it into a single, easy to read document.
This work is often thought to be even less exciting than transcription work, but there actually is a pretty good job market for it in terms of work from home opportunities.
There are even some major companies out there that offer insurance, and other benefits that the majority of people (over fifty or otherwise) will surely appreciate.
While the work itself might not be the most exciting stuff in the world, there is plenty of it, and the pay is decent enough to potentially make it worthwhile.
The Phone Service:
When people think of the responsibilities of the work from home professional, there is one job that often comes to mind: the phone service operator.
These jobs are often dreaded because frankly, they put you in the path of a lot of aggravated people. The work from home service representative does the same work as people who are working at a call center: they handle the questions and complaints of customers who are having issues with a product or service.
We have all called into a customer service hotline before, and many of us have even been rude to the person on the other end of the phone.
This work definitely is not for everyone. You are going to hear from aggravated people, and chances are that many of them will take that frustration out on you.
Perhaps in your fifty plus years of experience you feel that you have become good enough with people to make this job work.
Or maybe not. Interested parties should have a thick skin, and, most importantly, they should have really good people skills.
Pet sitting is a popular option for people of all ages that are currently occupying the work from home space. If you are of an advanced age, and looking for a low stress work opportunity, this is really something to think about.
The job of the work from home pet sitter is very low key: each day, people that work in your community drop their pets off at your residence, and then trust you to watch them for them while they attend to their business day.
Once the pet gets to your home, your responsibilities are usually pretty limited. You may be expected to walk with and play with the animals, or your duty may simply be to make sure that they don’t starve.
The nice thing about this work is that you can, realistically do it while doing other work from home jobs. For example, if you are a freelance writer, it probably won’t be much of a challenge to knock out a few articles while you watch the pets.
Like most opportunities these days, there are plenty of websites out there where pet sitters can go to find clients in their community.
The work of the remote personal assistant can involve a pretty wide range of tasks, but the good news is that this is a field in which the over fifty crowd might have advantages over younger applicants.
Why? Potential employers in need of a virtual assistant are going to really value a candidate with past experience, and proven responsibility.
If your resume indicates that you have both, you are going to stand out a lot more than people who are just now entering into the workforce.
There are both part and full time opportunities available for people considering the work of the work from home assistant, though unlike most work from home jobs, this opportunity will generally be subject to the schedule of your employer, which means you will have a little bit less freedom than you would have with some of the other opportunities that we have discussed.
Still, the tradeoff could very well be worth it to many applicants.
With a regimented schedule comes more consistent work hours, and a stable income. Some personal assistant positions have all of the benefits of a traditional hire, including a regular salary, and perhaps even benefits, while other contracts are on a freelance basis.
And of course, like all of these jobs, applicants interested in working as a personal assistant need only to look online.
The Survey Taker:
Perhaps you are more in the retirement stage of life, but would still like a work opportunity that can provide you with a little bit of extra spending money.
If this describes your situation, then the work of a survey taker might be right for you.
Survey taking is exactly what it sounds like it would be. You fill out surveys that are usually on a wide variety of topics, and then are paid small sums for the information.
The surveys are generally designed to assist with product marketing for people of certain demographics, though their application is not necessarily always known by the taker of the survey.
Pay definitely is not very good here—usually between $5-10 an hour, but if you are not depending on the money to pay your mortgage then survey taking could be a viable option for you.
The work is not at all mentally taxing, and can be done while you watch movies or television. Again, if you are using this money to pay the bills, the life of the survey taker probably is not going to be for you.
On the other hand, if you just want another $30-40 a day of walking around money, this is an opportunity to think about.
Just be careful before you get started. There are plenty of scam sites out there that don’t pay out as promised. Do your research before you sign up.
