How to Make Money With Shopify – It’s Pretty Simple Actually

Last Updated: December 20, 2018 //  by John

Ever thought of creating your very own online store? Thanks to a site called Shopify, you are able to create an ecommerce store to immediately start selling and making some dough.

There are thousands of people that want to make a living off the internet, but only a small number of them will push through the months of hard work until they finally get their breakthrough.

Which one are you?

Let’s debunk this website and see if we can earn passive income with it.

Here’s how to make money with Shopify.

About Shopify

If you haven’t already guessed it, Shopify is an e-commerce website and the company is located in Canada with their headquarters being in Ottawa, Ontario.

Shopify has clearly stood the test of time as they have been going since 2004 and they show no signs of slowing down either.

As a matter of fact, the site is growing every single month.

Throughout the years that it has been out for, the owners have been actively creating new apps and tools to ensure their visitors get the best experience while on the site.

How Does It Work?

As mentioned above, Shopify is an e-commerce website. What this means is that you can create your own shop/storefront on it, put some items up for sale, and if someone purchases something, you earn money.

You do not need to sell your own goods either. The beauty about Internet Marketing is that you can sell goods from other popular online stores, such as Amazon.com.

You can:

  • Organize your goods
  • Personalize your “storefront”
  • Accept credit card payments
  • Track and respond

Affiliate Vs Dropshipping

Being an affiliate for online stores means that you can advertise something off the website, and if someone clicks and buys, you get paid. That is it, there is no customer service involved, no shipping, just pure passive.

Then there is dropshipping. How you set the price of an item is COMPLETELY up to you. You can sell it for more if you choose to.

The difference is that you have to do your own customer service.

You also have to get the customer’s shipping address and then you then have to order the item from Amazon, (or any other store that you chose) and ship it to that address.

You keep the profit.

And that’s what Shopify really focuses on.

If you don’t want to do dropshipping but rather affiliate marketing, then scroll down to the bottom of this article, where it says “What I Recommend”. Otherwise keep reading.

How Much Does Shopify Cost?

Shopify does require a credit card if you wish to keep using them. However, you can use the 14 day free trial to view the website and get a feel for it, to see if it’s something you want to get into or not.

The basic package is fairly cheap and just like any POS system, they take 1.5% of all earnings.

So if you sell something for $100, they receive $1.50.

If the price of the item from the merchant is 70$, you pay for shipping and handling (for example: $8) you get $20.50 profit.

There are other packages available as well.

You can choose to pay $40 per month and pay no fees whatsoever, which is a good choice when you’re making a lot of money from your e-commerce site, not from the very start though.

Ways To Advertise Your Online Shop

Remember, you will need a large investment if you want to do advertising.

It’s all about testing, testing and more testing until you find a winner.

That’s why it won’t be cheap and it won’t be easy either, as every niche is different, what works for someone else may not work for you.

I do NOT recommend free advertising unless you already have a website that’s getting a lot of traffic, an email list of targeted subscribers, or a big Social Media following.

I’m talking about 10,000+ followers, otherwise it is just too difficult to sell anything.

Facebook Ads

Facebook ads are still currently one of the best ways to advertise your e-commerce website on, due to the fact that you can narrow down your audience as much as possible, really target the people that are likely to click and buy.

To increase click-through’s even more (clicking from Facebook to your Shopify storefront), make sure you create your own ads.

And be sure to add a discount number on your ad to make it look like they are getting a good deal as something like 20% off works great.

I know it’s bad, but that’s why everyone does it, because it WORKS and a lot of people are making a killing by doing so.

Tumblr

Tumblr is another good option.

Although it isn’t the best for your e-commerce website, you still have a lot of options available so you can choose who you want to advertise your website to.

The good thing about Tumblr is that you can find your audience really easy, which is why this is #2 on my list.

Google Adwords

Google Adwords are the advertisements that come up when searchers type a certain keyword into Google.

The only downside to this is that you have to BID against other advertisers, which can be a challenge depending on your niche.

However, if you have a lot of money and some confidence that you can start profiting in a fast amount of time, then it could work for you.

There are so many metrics that Google looks at before it shows your ad up in the search results too, so keep that in mind.

If your landing page isn’t relevant to the search query and you have a bad CTR rate, it won’t be shown as much + a lot of other metrics as well, putting Google Adwords at the bottom of my advertising list for dropshipping.

What I Recommend

As you already know by now, I’m more into affiliate marketing as I don’t want to be shipping items every single day nor do I want to deal with returns and stuff like that.

I want to work for a few hours a day and have the confidence that I can make money just from sending people from my link and to the merchants website.

They purchase an item and I get paid.

I use a program called the Wealthy Affiliate, which has all the training and support to have a solid affiliate marketing business up and running.

It is what I’m currently doing to make my living through the internet and it’s something I highly recommend for you to try as well.

If you want to do the whole dropshipping, advertising thing, then by all means give it a go as it sure beats any 9-5.

Making money online is a wonderful thing and I recommend any of the two methods as I know they will work wonders.

Click here to get a free trial of Shopify and create that ecommerce business most people only talk about.

Don’t be everyone else and take some type of action!
