Working from home absolutely sucks.
I mean, I do have a nice sized office and I do actually work from home, but it is probably really misunderstood by the 99% of the world that doesn’t do it.
From the outside looking in, you can only think that we have it made and “#goals” is usually the thought that comes to mind.
However, there are some things that I thought I would address here as there are too many people that come into things but eventually land back at their 9-5 kissing their bosses behind because things weren’t what they thought it would be.
So before you go thinking that this “dream job” is all fun and games, let me give you a little view from the inside so you don’t become another statistic.
Work From Home is Still Work
I can not stress about how working from home is just like any other job.
Sure you are your own boss but that can sometimes be a bad thing for most.
Without having someone to keep you on your toes, you are responsible for any and every piece of work that needs to get done.
Having your couch or bed just feet away does not help either and that is only a few of the many downsides to working from home.
I wake up way earlier than I did for my last job and I even get up earlier than when I was in the military.
How crazy is that?!
Well, I understand that I do have work to do and with 4 kids wanting my attention throughout the day, waking up before they do is something that needs to be done and that is exactly what I do.
I also do other things but I will get into that later.
Working From Home Can Be Stressful
As much as I appreciate the fact that I do work from home and I am the boss, I still find it to be stressful at times.
Not to sound like a brat or anything but I just want to let it be known that it does come with its challenges.
For me, I have 4 kids that are all under the age of 9 and you can tell how my household is just from that number alone.
The constant “dad, look at what so and so did” or even just “honey, did you know” can put a stop on things and you can lose focus within a split second.
Trying to get back on track won’t be easy either, and this will all lead to you being less productive, mind boggled, and ultimately stressed out.
So what can you do?
Well, there are several things that I do and it has made life a whole lot easier.
Set Your Schedule
This is one thing that has worked wonders for me and I’m sure it will help you as well.
I know we all want to be the boss and work on our own times but doing that will only lead to more problems.
If you plan on working from 8am – 10am, then so be it.
It might sound like this is a negative, cry baby post, but I wouldn’t trade working from home for anything.
Being able to work just two hours a day is great even if it is quite the task to get work done.
I can not stress enough about how you need to get on a schedule
Get Out of the House
I do this at least three times a week now.
Not only do I get a little more rest each day but I get to concentrate on the work that needs to be done.
Two hours of straight solid work at a coffee shop or two hours of choppy half done work trying to discipline a bunch of fighting children?
Being able to work for such a short time every single day is already a luxury, so let the kids know that mommy or daddy needs to get work done.
And if you’re like me and you are the only one working, I’m sure everyone in the household needs to understand that this is in fact a real job.
So if you’re finding it hard to get work done with all the chaos at home, get out there and find yourself a nice place to work.
Coffee shops are my usual spots but I also use hotel lobbies, the balcony, the pool, and even the beach.
The point is to get away from distractions.
Conclusion
Working from home does not always have to suck.
If you can find a way to balance things, you can enjoy it like I do.
And if you aren’t working from home already, you might want to get started as the beginning is always the hardest.
If you are looking to get started and don’t even know where to begin, you might want to read this.
Go about things on your own and I can promise you that you will encounter more scams than I did when I first started, so just trust me when I say that one is the best.
For those of you who deal with the same struggles, what do you do to help you be that much more productive?
