If you’re anything like me, the dream of working from your laptop is probably one of the strongest desires you have.
I tried every single online money making scheme you can think of from phone apps to niche blogging, and let me be the one to tell you that audio book producing is one of the quickest ways to generate income online today.
When you think about professional audio producers or recorders, you probably imagine a massive studio with all kinds of keyboards and buttons that make no sense.
Truth be told, I’ve produced audio books with a laptop, a $60.00 USB microphone, and a cheap sound booth that I made out of a shoe box, some duct tape, and some 2 inch thick foam.
Any time you try to make money online, you’ll have to invest something even if it’s just a small amount of money.
You’re investing in yourself, which is the greatest investment you can make.
Anyways, my point is that you can easily get in to audio book producing without spending anything over $100.00, and you’ll make that money back very quickly if you follow my methods.
I’ve failed miserably and have had massive success in the industry, so don’t think that you’ll just jump right in and make a living in a week.
It takes time, dedication, passion, and persistence.
The Two Types of Audio Book Producing
When you decide that you want to try out audio book producing, the next decision is what type of audio book producer do you want to be?
You can either narrate and produce the books yourself, or you can hire someone to narrate the book and then you produce it.
Let’s break down what they each entail so you can get a better understanding of the two.
The first method ( you do all the work ) generates you the most money obviously, since you’re putting in all the time and effort.
So what do you have to do to be this type of audio book producer? Check it out below:
- Write the audio book ( you can also write an eBook, then narrate it as well for extra money )
- Create an audio book cover ( create it yourself or you can pay someone to make it for you on Fiverr for cheap )
- Narrate the book itself with a microphone and a cheap sound booth ( again, check out my quick shoe box method in the intro ) and free/cheap audio recording software such as Audacity
- Publish the audio book on any audio book platform such as www.acx.com, or upload it to your own website
You’ll generate most of the profits this way, since you don’t have to pay anyone for the work ( unless you pay someone $5.00 for the cover ).
The other method gives you less profit, but you have to do barely any work and you don’t have to buy a microphone.
So how do you become an audio producer with this method?
- Write your audio book or eBook ( again, eBook is more money for you )
- Hire a narrator on www.acx.com or any other audio producing website
- Once you’ve approved their work, you can then upload the cover image that you’ll either create yourself or hire a person to do for you, just like the last method
- Publish the final copy on www.acx.com or wherever else you can ( your website, etc. )
How Do Sell Your Audio Books?
Great, now you’re officially an audio book producer and you’re waiting for your first sale.
Wait… It’s been a week now and nobody has bought your book, what did you do wrong?
Well, it’s not what you did do, it’s what you didn’t do.
Remember earlier how I said you’ll have to invest a lot of time as well?
It’s just begun, and you’re now in the marketing phase.
You’d never buy a GE oven if nobody ever told you that they existed. So how did you come to hear of them?
They marketed their butts off until you and millions of other people finally found them!
You’re not trying to sell expensive ovens here though, just a digitally read audio book.
It’s much easier, but you’ll need to do a few things to get the wheels spinning on your sales machine.
First, you’ll need some social media account. Make a Pinterest or Instagram dedicated to the niche of your audio book.
For instance, if your audio book is about training a dog, then make some social media accounts about dog training.
It’s nothing crazy, but you need an audience to get some sales.
Once you have your audience, keep growing it for future productions of audio books or eBooks!
Is Audio Book Producing Really Profitable?
Just like with almost any other avenue of making money online, audio book producing is worth it if you do it right.
Invest the right amount of time and patience and you’ll be off to the races.
Anything you do online is an art in a way, and art requires passion and dedication to the practice.
If you don’t show passion in your work, your audience will know and quickly lose interest.
Think about it this way, if musicians weren’t passionate, who would listen to their music?
Or who would look at a painting if the artist gave half effort?
The online business world is brutal and doesn’t have the time or patience for anyone who’s not willing to give it all that they’ve got.
Audio book producing is no exception, and if you put in the effort and passion, you’ll get great results.
It took me years to realize this, so hopefully this warning will help you skip all of the failed attempts and lost money that I had to deal with.
You want to work from home, right?
And you’re probably passionate about that concept I would hope!
Let that passion and dream show in your work, and you’ll experience lucrative results.
Good luck on your audio book producing journey, and don’t forget to follow each of the steps, and most importantly show your worth through your work!
