Choosing the right theme for your brand new website is cool, but have the wrong font and it can mean the difference from keeping your visitors on your site to having the highest bounce rate ever.
I used to think that the theme is what makes or breaks a site and of course I didn’t know any better.
Then I thought it was the font and again, I was still headed in the wrong direction.
We all know that content is king and writing for your audience will always take precedence over anything else.
To include the ever so demanding and hard to please, search engine king, Google.
Just because content rules all doesn’t mean we shouldn’t worry about other things like font and our overall theme either, right?
Font – It Matters
Picking a theme with the right font and all the bells and whistles is really hard to find as there are way too many to choose from.
You can have a really nice theme that looks perfect and then you have some small light colored font, which will have you scratching your head focusing on things that might not even matter.
There are those complicated themes that will only confuse newbies and then there are the super simple ones that lack in certain areas.
I always recommend a simple theme with a clear and easy to read font.
Everything else is an extra and should be focused on at a later time.
If you know nothing about coding, this can be a problem for you and you might end up having to change the theme that you thought was “the one”.
Rather than changing the whole theme I would try to go to your editor and see if you can make the changes there.
For me, this theme (Lifestyle) is ran off of the Genesis Framework and messing around with the code to change my font wasn’t the easiest task.
Lucky me, there is a plugin called Design Palette Pro that allows me to make simple and not so simple changes without messing around with any coding.
I love the StudioPress themes because they’re ready to go out of the box and is a lot easier to use than all the other themes I’ve used for my sites.
Even with my experience, I would still recommend those themes for anyone looking to take the easiest route to blogging, especially for SEO.
Font Color
Obviously you don’t want to have a font so light that your readers can’t even see what it says as I’m sure no one wants to see that.
However, as a blogger, you want your basic white background with some good old black font and not the other way around.
Just like you see it on this site and the sample below, is how you want it to be on your site.
Sure Apple has its feature that switches the color when reading at night, but there’s no need for all that on a website, especially if you plan on making any money.
Even if you think it looks cool to have white text with a dark background don’t forget that you’re writing for your audience and no one else.
Font Size
Being too small is the last thing you want for your blog and being too big is just overdoing it and won’t look right.
Your standard font size that comes with your theme should be fine but if yours just so happens to be too small, you might want to change it.
Again, you will have to go through the coding process or do a quick search for a plugin to help you in this department.
I’m sure you can also do a search on Youtube which will have an awesome video to walk you through the process, which works great too.
Content is Still King
In the end your font may be a small part of the equation, but it’s still a big deal.
I wouldn’t worry too much about it if it’s at least normal because I’m sure it will do the job and you have better things to worry about.
I’m sure you’ll know if your font needs to be changed as you know best, so if you feel that something isn’t right, you might want to fix it.
Fix your font if it’s not to standard and get back to focusing on your content because that’s really what matters.
Set yourself a nice little blogging schedule and get to work.
Your website isn’t going to make you money on its own now is it?
Until next time…Happy Blogging!
