Niche marketing is a great way to make money online the question of “are niche sites still working or is Google not rewarding them anymore?” has become very popular.
With the many updates and niche sites losing all kinds of traffic, you can only wonder if this is really the profession you should be in or if you’re better off at a regular old job.
So for those of you who are questioning the niche factor and if in fact it is still a reliable way to make money online, I want to explain everything before you become more confused than you already are.
Finding a niche and niching down is already a task in and of itself, so I’m sure you don’t want to waste your time doing such a thing if it isn’t even worth it.
Too many bloggers have called it quits but I want to show you why you shouldn’t follow suit.
Let me take you from niche to success in a way that most people will never understand.
Niching Down
Starting an online marketing business with niche marketing is really not as simple as it sounds.
And if you’re anything like me and you don’t have an actual interest in anything, I feel sorry for you.
With the many hobbies and things to do out there, you would think that everyone has at least one thing that they can truly say they are passionate about but that wasn’t the case with me.
At least when it came to finding a passion to build a business around.
Sure I am into a lot of things but I couldn’t say that I was truly passionate about it.
This uncertainty led to many niches that ultimately had me in the broader side of things.
Niching Too Far Down
And yes, it is a thing.
This is also the type of stuff that has online marketers questioning if niche sites still work.
Back in the day, this was the easiest way to make money with a niche site but going this route might not be your best bet.
There is a way to do this but it is going to require a real understanding of the business.
Something like “dog collars for poodles” is a great way to start but I wouldn’t build an entire site around it.
I think poodles alone is an awesome niche and there is no need to go about it any narrower than it already is.
Ilovepoodles.com is a great domain and starting off with collars is a great choice but don’t limit yourself to just collars for poodles as it is just not a natural sounding site that I’m sure Google can see.
How to Niche Correctly
For those of you who might still be confused, let me show you what I would do.
When picking your niche, stick with a broad style domain and definitely make it brand-able but just don’t limit it to just one thing as that is not going to help you with any future Google updates.
However, the start of your site should focus on a smaller aspect of your niche.
So the I love poodles site is going to be about poodles, correct?
What you would want to do now is build it around the collars that you niched down to but of course mix it up as you will be seen as another site trying to game the system.
Once you have gained some traction and started making some sales, you can then venture off into other poodle like activity.
I know the whole Poodle thing isn’t the greatest topic but it was what came to mind as I was doing this post.
But I do hope you get my point.
After just 6 months of blogging, you will have a site that is an AUTHORITY and not just a micro-niche type of site.
Authority Sites
This is exactly where you want to be.
In any topic you choose, you want to become the authority in that niche.
Don’t let this confuse you and send you on a very broad side of the spectrum as you will become another overwhelmed blogger that can’t figure out why you aren’t getting any traffic and making any sales.
This can be very confusing and is very common with most new bloggers.
I want to be in the make money from home niche or I want to be the fitness guru.
Go about it that way and you can not only expect to be overwhelmed but you will find yourself getting slapped around by Google later.
Unless you have a team of writers helping you with a site, there is no reason why you should be taking on anything too broad.
Simple Math
If you are having trouble with a niche, numbers will always help.
By understanding that there are only 365 days in a year and you being just one person, you can easily see that one, you will most likely not do 365 posts and two, you can cover a small part of a topic without having to cover everything under the sun.
This also proves that one website is really all you need, unless you want to get overwhelmed like the many failed blog attempts out there.
It’s crazy what a simple understanding of what numbers can do for something so big as an online business.
So Are Niche Sites Dead?
Of course not!
They are very much a great way to make money online and one that will continue to do so for as long as the internet and search engines remain a thing.
If you can follow the simple tips form this post, there is no reason why you can’t succeed with affiliate marketing.
There are many bloggers that have made it with doing nothing but product reviews but unless you don’t want to get punished by Google, I wouldn’t recommend you follow them.
It is only a matter of time before they lose a lot of their traffic, so please just stay away from them.
Google is evolving and I’m sure they will not favor a site that does nothing but reviews.
For those of you who are part of Wealthy Affiliate, just follow the training and you will find success online.
For those of you who are looking to get started, that is exactly where you need to go for all your affiliate marketing/blogging needs.
Besides that, there is no reason as to why you should not get involved with any type of online marketing.
More Tips
When starting a site or trying to build on something that seems will never get off the ground, here is what you need to do.
You have a completely new site or you have your niche and have either been at it for a really long time and can’t seem to gain any traction.
That’s okay.
However, you might want to pay attention to these simple tips.
Instead of doing review after review, build out your site with 3 simple topics related to your niche.
For those of you work from home/make money online (MMO) folks out there, this is especially for you as I’m going to be using it as an example.
Work from home is broad and with the crazy competition of review sites out there, it would be very wise to niche down and stand out from the crowd.
Get into one of the following and build out or rebuild from there.
- Quitting your job
- Affiliate marketing
- Niche marketing
- Blogging
- Finding online jobs
- Starting an online business
- Network marketing
Of course there are many more but I just picked the obvious as I wanted to show you the many options that come with something like “working from home”.
Take one topic, chop it into 3 different parts, and build out your site from there.
Do some guides, tutorials, and provide nothing but solid information that you can link to from other posts that are strictly for getting traffic.
If you are on the review train, now would be a great time to get off if you want to make it online.
Throw in a review here and there while you are building out your site but if you focus on what I just mentioned, you will get the rankings and traffic you deserve.
Take the time to write out several topics and posts that can be created from these topics and you will see results.
Whether you are starting a new site or have one that you can build from (the correct way), there’s no need to hit the panic button but rather just focus on what has been working and will work for many years to come.
Conclusion
Start a niche site and become the authority in that niche.
Google will always be Google and if there is a time to start a nice niche blog, it would be now.
There are thousands (if not millions) of bloggers that have been hit with a penalty and it is simply because they didn’t follow the rules and principles of online marketing.
With that slap in the face, you can bet that a lot of people will be quitting, which only leaves more opportunity for people like yourself to come in and take over.
I hope this simple post has given you a better understanding of where niche marketing stands and I also hope that you can see the true potential of what a simple website can do.
