Is Scentsy A Scam? With All the Mixed Reviews, This Has All The Answers

Last Updated: December 12, 2017 //  by John

There are many Scentsy reviews out there but it almost has you more confused than when you first found out about the company as there are so many mixed emotions about this business.

“Scentsy is a scam”.

“Scentsy is so awesome”.

It’s just one of those things that you’ll never get a straight answer to, so I would like to help you make your decision on whether or not you should join this scented candle business.

But everyone enjoys a good fragrance, right?

More importantly, everyone appreciates an opportunity for financial independence, and the ability to set their own hours.

Fortunately, Scentsy offers both.

Do you want to work from home, with no boss to answer to?

I think most people can say yes to that question too.

Scentsy offers a multi-level sales structure, meaning through their organization you have the opportunity to set your own hours, sell their product, and earn money.

Of course, this career path is not right for everyone as it has a lot to do with recruiting others, so let’s take a closer look at this business to determine whether or not it is right for you.

Owners: Orville & Heidi Thompson

Price: $49 to get started

Overall Rating: 2.5/5 stars

First, What is Scentsy?

Hey, there’s a fair question.

There is a fairly decent chance that you haven’t even heard of this company, though if you are aware of organizations like Avon or Tupperware, you at least understand their business model.

Scentsy sells scented wax, as well as a wide variety of bath and laundry products.

Basically, if you are into things that smell good, they have you covered.

If you like these products and think that you would be good at selling them, this will give you the “opportunity” to become what they refer to as a consultant.

I put the word opportunity in quotes because this isn’t exactly a charitable offer.

In order to become a Scentsy consultant you are going to need to buy into their program, which means investing in product, business cards, and a website.

This isn’t like a traditional employment opportunity in which you get the same paycheck each month, as the income at Scentsy is entirely merit based, meaning you only make the amount of money you are able to earn as a salesman.

Like I said, this career path definitely is not for everyone, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t right for you!

Let’s now take a more specific look at Scentsy to determine whether or not it is an organization that you would like to be a part of.

The Product

People experience mixed results in terms of the quality of product provided by Scentsy.

On one hand, you will be selling things that most people like and I’m certainly not ashamed to say that I am a big fan of a pleasant fragrance.

Selling desirable products is definitely a big plus when it comes to a job that is entirely commission based, and it certainly isn’t terribly difficult to convince someone why they want a product that is going to make their house smell good.

On the other hand, if that customer comes to find that the product didn’t smell as good as they were hoping it would, you might have a problem.

This is a business that really depends on repeat customers so you want to make sure that people are interested in what you are selling.

The chief complaint that most people have about Scentsy products is how long the smell lasts.

Unfortunately, some users find that products like their “Scent Squares,” have a lifespan on only a few days.

Of course, there are also a lot of people who have really positive experiences with the product, and are repeat buyers.

The absolute best way to determine whether or not these products are even worth selling is to get some for yourself and see if they are something that you would like to keep in your home.

If they are, you may have found yourself a new job opportunity. If not, you should probably reconsider Scentsy as a career opportunity.

The Price

There are two sides to things, with one being the products, and the other being the business/MLM.

To get started as a consultant, it is going to cost you at least $49, which I find to be absolutely affordable and a lot better than other MLM startup costs.

There are two different starter kits and I will like to go over them next.

Essential Kit

  • A warmer
  • 80 + scented mini testers
  • Catalogs
  • Order forms
  • 3 months of your personal website ($10/month after)

Then there’s the standard kit that costs $99 and gives you everything you need to run your Scentsy business.

The Compensation Plan

For those of you looking to see how much you can make by recruiting others, here’s a breakdown on what you can make if you did in fact recruit others into the company.

As a consultant, you earn 20 percent on the first 1,000 points in PRV (personal retail volume) and then 25 percent on PRV after that.

You can also earn up to a 9 percent bonus on personal wholesale volume based on your rank, as well as a 5 percent bonus when you exceed 2,000 points in PRV in any given month.

To remain qualified for earnings as a consultant, you must generate sales resulting in 200 points or more in PRV in AT LEAST one month within any contiguous 3 month period.

These points can come from individual customer orders, party orders, or any orders made through your personal website.

How to Get Involved With Scentsy

Getting started with Scentsy is essentially as simple as buying a starter kit. There are a variety of packages from which to choose and they are available at a variety of prices but in general you can expect to pay around one hundred dollars for your starter kit.

Your package is going to include access to a website (an invaluable tool as that is where most of your customers may very well do their shopping) samples, catalogues, and a free gift.

These tools are important as they are the means by which you will launching your business. At Scentsy launching your sales career is largely up to you, so take advantage of every resource that you have.

The organization incentivizes you to keep up with your sales be establishing quotas.

If you fail to meet your sales quota (the quota changes but as of now is at $150 a month) you lose perks.

It sounds harsh, but actually I view this as a positive.

One of the difficulties of self-employment is that there is no one around to make sure that you are working as hard as you can.

Quotas ensure that you stay motivated to work as hard as you can and if you aren’t able to make your quota, you probably aren’t right for the job anyway.

How Much Can You Expect to Make?

It’s hard to say as it depends exclusively on YOUR sales.

For your first thousand dollars in sales, you bring home a twenty percent commission.

After that you can expect to bring home a twenty five percent commission, which is a nice little increase.

You also will make nine percent down the line volume of the sales of anyone that you train or recruit into Scentsy.

What this all equates to in terms of actual dollar figures is too hard to say for sure.

As of right now the average consultant makes around three hundred dollars a year.

That’s definitely not a livable wage, but on the other hand, there are people out there making a comfortable living through Scentsy, so it all just depends on how good you are at sales.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Good product selection
  • Can make you money
  • Very affordable startup cost
  • Solid reputation

Cons:

  • Usually requires recruiting to make more
  • Actual products can be pricey for some

Conclusion

Again, this definitely isn’t going to be right for everyone.

If you are a shy introvert with minimal people skills, trying to learn a living as a salesperson just isn’t practical.

On the other hand, if you are an outgoing people person, Scentsy provides a real opportunity to make money working for the most easy going boss in the world: yourself.

This is not a scam but it is just like any other MLM you have seen in your life.

Not my #1 recommended business, but it might just be the one for you.

Thanks for reading my Scentsy review and I hope it has answered any questions you had that you were confused about.

Thanks for reading and good luck!
