Do You Really Have the Time to Start and Run a Blog?

Last Updated: December 22, 2018 //  by John

time-management-and-blogging

Whether you plan on making money with your blog or if you simply want to do it as a hobby, you need to really evaluate your current lifestyle.

There are just too many people that come into the blogging world when they are really not ready to do such a thing.

Without a simple understanding of what kind of time you have available, you can very much be setting yourself up for failure.

That is why I want to talk about this thing called time, especially if you are looking at starting a blog to make money.

What Kind of Time Do You Really Have?

If you are currently employed and you have kids, time is almost never on your side.

As a parent myself, starting a blog was something I actually never even thought about doing but I knew that there were a lot of people making good money with it.

Not to say that I was chasing the money but I figured that if there were actual people making actual careers out of such a thing, then why not me?

Starting out was not the prettiest but I did learn one valuable lesson: Blogging requires a huge commitment.

With that word alone, you can expect that a lot of your normal life needs to change or it simply is not going to happen.

For me, I knew that having a job, kids, and even taking some classes in college was not going to work.

I made one of the biggest decisions of my life and it worked out for the better.

Making the Right Decision(s)

This part of the post is what I did and not recommended.

At all.

Rather than pursuing my bachelor’s degree or moving up the ranks at work, I took a route that only a true entrepreneur would take.

I didn’t just slowly easy my way into the internet lifestyle, I did the unimaginable.

I dropped out of college and I quit my job.

With some kids to feed and no other source of income, this was not the brightest idea.

I did have some money that I thought would last me at least 6 months but that depleted a lot sooner than I expected.

That risk landed me in debt and without an income for at least 6 months.

On top of that unwanted stress, I had a mom and another half that was beyond fed up with my idea.

Did that stop me?

Of course not.

That debt and negativity from everyone around me was nothing but fuel for what I really wanted to do and it paid off.

I Finally Made Money

Maybe I should’ve said I made a dollar because that is really all it was.

To me, it was everything.

To all the doubters and negative people in my life, that was pathetic.

That $1 soon turned into $100 and eventually $1,000 and so on.

Within a year’s time I was making more money than any job I have ever held and the most important part about all this was the fact that I was working on my own time.

Blogging is not the easiest thing to do but if you have the right training and guidance, there is no reason as to why you can not succeed with it.

From doubting and frowning upon what I set out to do, the same naysayers are now believers.

Not to say that I did any of it for them but I am just glad I didn’t let myself and my kids down.

Time is a lot More Valuable Than You Think

If you take a look at my little journey, you would see that I made the sacrifice and quite my job and college.

Those two things were taking way too much of my time and I knew that they would get in the way of what I really wanted to do.

Instead of working around what most would think is necessary, I cut it out and that is really what made all the difference.

Again, that is not something I would recommend but as an entrepreneur there needs to be some kind of change or it isn’t going to happen.

On top of adjusting my time, I adjusted the people around me.

Anyone who didn’t agree with what I was doing just got put in a category that didn’t require any conversations around making money.

Everyone and their mothers (literally) have the best way for us to do things but it really isn’t.

Think for yourself and most especially do not let anyone who is not doing what you want to do dictate how you will live.

Value your time as it is a HUGE asset to your business.

If you can’t understand that then you might just be normal.

Being normal is not going to get you what you want, so make some changes.

Mentality is of course a big one but I did a whole post on it here, which is why I left it out of this one.

Conclusion

If you want to become a blogger and a successful one at that, you need to find the time to make it happen.

I say still keep your job but find that time to start your own blog.

Sure the money is great, but the time you will have to do whatever you want it the most rewarding.

I am at every single one of my kid’s school events and I get to spend most of my time with them (because blogging is still a job).

Being that I was in the Army, I very much appreciate the time I spend with my family and if it wasn’t for this thing called blogging, I really don’t think it would’ve happened.

There is a lot that needs to be learned outside of blogging, but if you can simply change your mentality and surround yourself with the right people (usually other bloggers), you can find success on the internet.

Thanks to sites like Wealthy Affiliate, you can have access to a whole bunch of online entrepreneurs who have blogged their way to the top and are willing to help you do the same.

Join the community of like minded entrepreneurs and you will see how making such a simple adjustment in your life can help.

Now you tell me…

How much is your time really worth?
