Build a Website: Step By Step Guide For Newbs

website-under-construction

In this day and age, websites are more useful and powerful than ever. Whether you’re trying to build one for your business or to make money online, a website is going to be a must if you want to compete.

With all the website builders out there and the fact that you don’t need to use any crazy computer coding like they did back in the day, there is no excuse as to why you don’t own a piece of online real estate.

If you are ready to build your money producing website, I want to help you get started on the right track. Not all platforms are created equal, so let me show you the best way to build a website that will actually make you money.

Who Can Use a Website

  • Business owners
  • Bloggers
  • Online marketers
  • Photographers
  • Hobbyists

Free VS Paid Websites

There are way too many website builders out there that want to give you their “free” websites, but every single one of them come with some type of catch.

One may have you build your site and then have you pay in the end, while others will have their ads all over your site, which in turn, makes it their site.

With content managing systems like WordPress, you have the option of owning a free website, without any of the hidden costs.

See how you can create your first site for free by checking if there is an available domain name for a site you might be interested in building.

Your Needs

When building your first website, you want to ask yourself a couple of questions. Not only will this help you in getting started, but it will also help you function a lot better in the long run.

What am I going to use my site for?

What are my goals with this site?

Should I use a free or paid website?

This will help in the money making side of things, so please answer these questions, even if you feel you don’t need to.

Choosing a Website Builder

There are so many website building platforms out there and one of the biggest things that separate one from the other is usually the advertising.

If I was to ask you what website building company you’ve seen lately, you’d probably say Wix or Weebly as they are highly advertised year round.

I built my first website back in 2010, which I built for the intentions of making money online. Of course I didn’t go for the big names, because I needed a make money website, which I could do more than just build a site.

Being that I have seen and tried almost every single website builder out there, I have come to the conclusion that it all depends on what your reason is for wanting to build your own website for in the first place.

Here is a list of some of the most used and most advertised website building platforms out there and what I think they are worth.

A Website Starts With a Sweet Domain Name

Whether you use a free or paid version of any website builder, you always want to choose a domain that you actually like and know you can brand.

With the changes that Google has made, your best bet will always be to brand your site rather than choose one with a keyword rich domain.

I have purchased over 100 domains in my career and I have used under 5 of them. So be careful as “domaining” can be a big distraction for those of you wanting to start your own online business.

Hosting is a MUST

This is one thing that most website building sites fail to mention, which is something that will come with an added cost.

There is no way around this. Period. Without hosting, let’s just say that you don’t have a website. So when building your first site, make sure you understand hosting before you start building your site on Weebly or something.

Understanding Themes

Whenever anyone chooses a theme for their first time, they will usually choose a theme based on the pictures that are used in a sample for that theme.

Once you start messing around with different themes, you’ll soon realize that sometimes all the bells and whistles are something you don’t really need.

Look at the theme for this site. There is nothing fancy about it, but I absolutely love the fact that it is simple and very easy for my readers to read.

I went from wanting the prettiest site on the block, to trying to build something a little more simple and less complicated.

Your Content Management System (CMS)

I don’t think there’s a better platform than WordPress when it comes to managing the content on your website.

With no need for any computer codes, this is by far the most easy to use and powerful CMS out there. This is also why it is the most widely used platform.

Use this handy dandy tool to see how you can build your first website for free. Personally, I always say you should buy your own domain, but if you are just getting started, then a free website will do just fine.
