Affiliate Marketing 101 – Are You The Publisher Or The Advertiser?

Last Updated: August 30, 2018 //  by John

advertising

When signing up for an affiliate program, you find yourself asking the same question thousands of affiliates are wondering. “Am I the publisher or am I the advertiser?”.

Even with my 2 years worth of experience I find myself asking the same question, simply because I haven’t signed up for an affiliate program since before Google let the penguin go.

To give you a little help to the online world, I want to help you distinguish who you really are as an affiliate marketer.

So, Are You the Publisher or the Advertiser?

You are the publisher! I know it may sound a little too fancy, but that is what you are my friend. It sounds more fitting to be called the advertiser because of what we do (advertise affiliate products), but not so much the case when applying to become an affiliate for one of the networks.

I think this is also why I find myself scratching my head when I get asked that question. The way you can do this is just tell yourself that you are not advertising your products, but applying to publish products from different advertisers.

The Advertiser (Not you)

This is the person looking for people to promote their products. They have created a product or products and now they are looking for affiliate marketers (you) to get them seen.

This is also the same person that will be making you money. So by promoting their product, they will give you whatever percentage they want.

If you are dealing with big companies, the commission will always be less. When you deal with a single person, they usually offer over 50% commissions. I know, it’s great!

The Publisher (You)

yup, this would be you. You are the one that will be getting the advertiser’s product out there. Whether it’s through an ad on your site, within your blog posts, or some type of email marketing campaign, you will be trying to make sales with their products.

The best part about this is the fact that you don’t have to create your own product. You still get a good chunk of the sale, yet you don’t have to own the product.

It Happens

I really don’t know what it is, but you will forget later on down the road. Now that you’ve read this article, I think you will have a better chance at remembering who you really are.

Unless you’re like me that will always forget, you can now remember who you are when you join another affiliate network.

As a product creator, you know exactly who you are. I just thought I’d mention that if you were wondering how I know you are an publisher and not a product creator.

Don’t Forget, YOU are the PUBLISHER

i-am-a-publisherAs we get older, we forget things a lot faster. I am only 32, but I get what my elders used to tell me when I was a kid.

Now I can tell these youngins the same thing.

“You will forget things when you get to my age”.

I hope this article has helped you understand what the difference is between a publisher and an advertiser. Let me leave you with a nice little reminder…

You are the publisher!
